Why choose the Algarve for a holiday?

Portugal

Portugal

People are drawn to Portugal's Algarve coast by some of the best beaches in Europe, fantastic sporting facilities, superb eating out in all standards of restaurants, and last, but certainly not least, the wonderful Algarve climate that gives over 3000 hours of sunshine each year.

Even during the hot summer months, cooling Atlantic breezes make life comfortable, and the evenings are normally cool and pleasant for sleeping. The region is colourful to say the least. Brightly coloured fishermen's boats are dotted along the beaches and the fresh fish and vegetable markets are a sight to behold.

Some of the finest golf courses in Europe are here in the Algarve and they attract many golfers each year. Deep sea fishing, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, athletics and scuba diving are facilities to be found in abundance.

The Beaches

Beaches

One of the Algarve's greatest assets - unlike most other resorts - is the wealth of beautiful, clean, sandy beaches. Whether you prefer long sandy stretches with ample facilities or tiny isolated coves, you certainly will not be disappointed! With about 100 miles of varied coastline you have a lot to choose from.

Although the beaches of the Algarve are consistently sandy, the cut of the coastline varies considerably. To the west at Sagres, you will find the cliffs high, stone hard and dramatic. From Salema to Lagos, Pria da Rocha, and on to Albuferia, the cliffs are mainly fossil.

In this area you will find the lovely coves and grottoes, some of which are only accessible by sea. Imagine what a wonderful feeling it is to be lying basking in the sun on a near deserted beach. Bathing suits are optional!

The Climate

Climate

The Algarve's healthy climate, pure air and mostly pollution-free environment are nicely complemented by wholesome, locally caught and home-grown food. In particular, there is a wonderfully wide range of seafood, including all sorts of clams, prawns and lobster, and delicious fresh fish such as swordfish, tuna, sea bass and sea bream. Eating out in restaurants is all the more delightful because Portuguese wines are so good and so reasonably priced.
